Canopy Power completes solar PV plus storage microgrid at Batu Batu resort on the Malaysian island of Pulau Tengah

October 10, 2020/in Press Release, Projects/by Solar Business Hub

Canopy Power has completed a solar PV-energy storage microgrid for sustainable island resort Batu Batu. With an estimated renewable energy contribution of 25 per cent, the microgrid will produce approximately 216 MWh of clean electricity and reduce diesel use for the resort by around 58,000 litres annually. This translates to a reduction of 180 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

Batu Batu is located on an off-grid island 16 kilometres off the town of Mersing, on the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The 22-villa resort has a strong sustainable ethos and works hard on creating sustainable practices to limit its impact on the environment, as well as initiatives to protect and regenerate surrounding biodiversity within the protected Johor Marine Park.

Cher Chua-Lassalvy, founder and co-owner of Batu Batu said:

“We first met Canopy Power at a Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) event about 18 months ago, and chose to work with them because they have a track record of successfully working with other sustainable off-grid island resorts similar to ours. We view this installation as part of Batu Batu’s continuous journey to becoming more responsible in all that we do, be it in water treatment, biodiversity management, community outreach or programmes with the local stakeholders. Integrating renewable energy into our energy systems is a very important step in our journey towards lightening our environmental load.”

Prior to the installation of the microgrid, the resort was fully reliant on diesel for energy. Canopy Power designed, developed and constructed the independent microgrid to specifically address the resort’s existing electrical generation issues. The installation – consisting of a 180 kWp rooftop solar system with panels from REC Solar and solar inverters from German company SMA, as well as a 100 kWh energy storage system from Sungrow – is mounted on various rooftops across the resort. Canopy Power also integrated its in-house developed Hornbill asset management platform that enables remote operations and maintenance as well as real-time, monitoring of the microgrid.

Sujay Malve, founder and CEO of Canopy Power said:

“Canopy Power is delighted to partner with Batu Batu to deliver maximal results for cost-efficiency and clean energy generation, to support the needs and goals of the resort. The current events and its economic implications highlight the energy security problem for many, and we aim to help alleviate this as a solution provider and create a bigger positive impact through more successful implementations.”
