First solar power and battery minigrid system to be installed at Virunga National Park in Congo

GivePower Foundation’s first minigrid system has been installed at the Virunga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, which is Africa’s oldest national park and most biologically diverse protected area. Virunga is home to nearly a quarter of the world’s critically endangered mountain gorillas.

The project was made possible through a collaboration with Empowered by Light, an organization dedicated to improving lives and the environment through renewable energy technologies. Solar energy will provide new power sources to three sector posts within Virunga, enabling park rangers to utilize essential tools – including security lights, radios and more – for their work protecting the park’s wildlife.

Tata Power acquires Welspun Renewables and becomes largest renewable power company in India

Tata Power, India’s largest integrated power company, announced on Monday that, Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (“TPREL”), a 100% subsidiary of Tata Power, has signed an SPA with Welspun Energy Private Limited (“WEPL”) to acquire its subsidiary Welspun Renewables Energy Private Limited (“WREPL”). This represents the largest transaction in renewables space in India.

World record total of $286 billion invested in renewables in 2015, says UNEP’s report

“Global Trends in Renewable Energy Investment 2016“, the 10th edition of UNEP’s annual report, launched today by the  Frankfurt School-UNEP Collaborating Centre for Climate & Sustainable Energy Finance and Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF), says the annual global investment in new renewables capacity, at $266 billion, was more than double the estimated $130 billion invested in coal and gas power stations in 2015.
