The Smart Energy Company chosen by NB Power to build the first utility-scale solar farm in Atlantic Canada
New Brunswick, Canada, June 10, 2021 (Solar Business Hub) — The Smart Energy Company, a New Brunswick-based leading renewable energy developer, has been chosen by Canadian electric utility NB Power to assist in the building of their new 1.63MW community solar farm in Shediac, New Brunswick. With over 4,000 solar panels connected to an energy storage system, this is the first utility-scale solar farm in Atlantic Canada.
The solar farm will be connected to Shediac’s distribution grid and provide clean energy for the Government of Canada Pension Centre and the Town of Shediac Multipurpose Centre, resulting in a net-zero rating. If at any time there is an excess of energy produced by the solar farm, it will be fed directly into the community providing Shediac with green energy.
The Smart Energy Company will build this solar farm using their trademarked NOREASTER® product. This modularized, solar energy solution is designed and manufactured in New Brunswick in collaboration with the National Research Council of Canada, specifically to maximize performance in snowy climates.
NOREASTER® has been successfully implemented throughout New Brunswick, providing agricultural businesses, commercial enterprises, and municipalities with the means of achieving their greenhouse gas emission reduction targets.
Mark McAloon, Chief Executive Officer of The Smart Energy Company said:
“We are excited to be a part of this important project for New Brunswick. This will help to stimulate the growth of solar energy in our province while also proving that a New Brunswick-made product can be exported to other utilities to meet the growing demand for solar farms across North America.”
Scheduled for completion by the end of 2021, this project is an important component of the Smart Grid Atlantic energy program being implemented by NB Power, in conjunction with Siemens Canada, Nova Scotia Power, and the Town of Shediac.
Keith Cronkhite, NB Power’s Chief Executive Officer said:
“We’re proud to have found a New Brunswick company to build the first Community Solar Farm in New Brunswick. Adding renewable energy to our grid is vital to lowering our greenhouse gas emissions as a province, and finding the right partner at an affordable price who can help us achieve this goal in Shediac is an amazing outcome to our selection process.”
