Bike path on Korea’s highway covered with solar panels

Sejong is located in the heart of South Korea at about 75 miles south of Seoul,

Solar panels covered bike path

Korean Culture and Information Service (KOCIS) released last month via Facebook a video taken by a drone showing an aerial view of a bike path covered with solar panels  in the center of a highway in South Korea running 350 km (220 miles) between the cities of Daejeon and Sejong, near Seoul.

As pointed out by KOCIS the solar panels will not only generate power but also provide protection to cyclists from sun and rain.

Sejong: “Asia’s green metropolis of the future”

Sejong is a city built from scratch conceived to be “one of the world’s greenest cities” by 2030 when it is expected to be completed.

To build Sejong, the South Korean government established a new government agency, the Multifunctional Administrative City Construction Agency (MACCA) in 2006.

Some facts provided by MACCA about the project :

  • The first residential area in Sejong was completed by the end of 2011, and the central ministries and offices started relocating to Sejong from 2012.
  • Sejong’s population is expected to reach 500,000 by 2030.
  • The city’s 500,000 residents will include officials of federal ministries and offices.
  • The total of 6,520 apartment units was sold out before buildings were completed.
  • As of the end of March 2012, about 90% of the home buyers moved into their new homes.

An article published on  World Bank, stated that Korean government planned to invest $30 billion in urban infrastructure, renewable energy, vast open landscapes, cultural and business parks, public transport networks, and residential complexes.

Director General Lim Jubin of the Infrastructure Bureau said, according to a press release published in September last year:

“We have more plans to make MAC a true solar city. Solar panels are already installed on our bike paths and more will be done for residential areas as well.”
