Marubeni and EDF enter Chilean power market with 146 MW solar project
“Laberinto Project” solar PV plant located in the Atacama Desert in the region of Antofagasta in Chile.
Marubeni has entered into a partnership agreement with EDF Energies Nouvelles, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Électricité de France (EDF) to jointly invest in Laberinto Project, a 146 MW photovoltaic solar plant located in the Atacama Desert in the region of Antofagasta, Chile, which has the highest level of irradiation in the world.
This project, which is equally owned by EDF Energies Nouvelles will be connected to Chile’s Northern Interconnected System (SING).
Laberinto Project constitutes the third joint project between Marubeni and EDF Energies Nouvelles following two projects in the North American region.
Starting from this first investment footprint in the Latin American power sector, Marubeni intends to expand its presence in the region. Upon completion of this transaction, Marubeni’s total worldwide generation capacity will be 35,434 MW (gross) and 11,022 MW (net).
Chile is the 20th country in which EDF Energies Nouvelles is present. As stated by the company EDF Energies Nouvelles has secured a long term project financing from a pool of local and international banks and EDF EN Chile has undertaken the implementation of Laberinto, its first solar plant project of 146 MWp in installed capacity. Construction and Operations & Maintenance for the solar plant project are managed by an EDF Energies Nouvelles’ subsidiary dedicated to these activities.
The “Laberinto Project” solar PV plant will contribute to the Chilean government’s objective of generating 20% of the country’s power from renewable energies by 2025.
