Elecnor to build largest solar PV plant in the Dominican Republic

February 28, 2020/in Projects/by Solar Business Hub

Spanish infrastructure, energy and telecommunications group Elecnor, S.A. announced it  has been awarded the turnkey construction of a 120 MW solar PV plant  for the Dominican Republic’s  largest power generation company, Empresa Generadora de Electricidad Haina  (EGE Haina).

The Girasol solar plant will be located in Yaguate in the province of San Cristóbal. Construction will be carried out on a 220-hectare site where the solar irradiance is  higher than the average in the Dominican Republic and will involve the installation of 300,000 photovoltaic modules, a 150-MVA substation and a 138-kV transmission line stretching 10 km.

According to Elecnor the Girasol solar plant will be the country’s largest solar PV station.

The energy produced will be distributed through the Dominican Republic’s National Interconnected Electric System (SENI). This new photovoltaic power station will boost the capacity of the solar projects connected to SENI by 64%.

Elecnor has been present in the Dominican Republic for 40 years. Elecnor first won a contract in the Dominican Republic in 1980 and it has recently constructed the 48-MW Larimar II Wind Farm in the province of Barahona for the same client EGE Haina.
